I Wanted To Be A Bassist.

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

Damn. I’ve been listening to Nina and Session Road eversince I went to a pal’s place. I’m not really the sentimental listening dude but what attracted me to these two were their bassists. I’ve always wanted to play bass after meeting my godfather, Ninong Doming(ok he’s not that old, really.),  who is a great bass player and I’ve been influenced by him from my musicality to my playing. Of all the usual intruments in a band it’s the bass and drums that I like hearing. `cos their the only ones you usually hear when your far away. :) Haha. And you seldom find good bassists in today’s modern rock n roll. No offence but yeah. Except those heavy metal ones..

Nina is in the Soul category, and one of the songs that have a great bassline is ‘Sunlight’. I don’t really know all the technical stuff in bass haha but I’ve always love it when they do the ‘boom’ thingy in which you slide it down the fretboard after hitting a note then back up to the next note. haha.. and the classic slap and pop technique.. and a bassline that is in sync with the bass drum and the singer.. like it sings along with the singer? :) hehe.

It’s kinda sad hearing some people say bass is not important haha. Bass is DAMN important haha.. it sets the groove and the bassist and the drummer are inseparable. Cos the bassist powers the bass drum and the drummer gives the bassist a rhythm..something like that.. read it somewhere but it was a lil more clearer that this ahha sorry..

Most people tend to oversee the bassist. Haha that’s why you mostly hear poeple saying, ‘I want to be a guitarist/drummer.’

WELL all in all the bassist keeps the whole band together and creates the tension and it fills in the empty gaps the guitars or whatever leaves behind.. listen to Flea. :) Most people love the bass guitar `cause of its simplicty and purity. Whooots!

Im not a pro in music considering I didn’t study theory but once a person’s musicality matures, they start seeing the big picture whether you know theory or not. And one of the best lessons I’ve learnt in 2006 was the relationship of each instrument in a band. :)

And if you want to listen to songs with great basslines listen to Funk music.. where the guitars don’t overpower the bass unlike in alternative rock. I recommend Red Hot chilli Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik album and the albums before that.

Cheers.

Oh, HAPPY NEW YEAR! :D

A nice website. :)
